To wish someone or something a good luck and success
Etymology:
- This is an American expression which might have originated from the superstitious beliefs many had at that time. Cross was meant to keep away or avoid any evil thing or bad luck. Keeping the fingers cross was also one of the tactics of children’s game to ensure one is safe. Today, its use has been more improvised, if someone tells a lie with keeping the fingers of his hands cross, it is to suggest that the lie is not counted.
