Etymology:
- In 19th century, when this expression originated, it was observed any person who started a fight with his opponent often seemed to have taken his shirt off. As in a fight, you get injuries and stains as well, so it becomes difficult to fight with that starched shirt, but if you remove or just take it off, it would not get dirty or stained. In short, this phrase “keep your shirt on” means to avoid any fight and are cool.
