Etymology:
- It is noticing that this phrase was initially used by William Shakespeare as ‘stuffed man”. It was later in the 20th century that the man was replaced with ‘shirt’. It simply refers to a person who has false opinion of his or her own importance, and who like to state or show it in public. People who always held themselves in high esteem are puffed up, so they appear to be like a stuffed shirt.
